PRESS RELEASE

Bryan Schwartz Law, P.C. Hires Matthew Junker as Summer Associate at the Oakland-Based Civil Rights, Employment Law Firm

June 5, 2018 Oakland – Bryan Schwartz Law, P.C. welcomes Matthew Junker as a Summer Associate. He joins the firm after completing his second year at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law.

“I believe work should be a creative, empowering process,” says Junker, “but far too many people encounter labor abuses that strike at their core dignity. I want to help change that.” This desire to defend employees against such abuses led Junker to Berkeley Law, where he has become heavily involved in the school’s workers’ rights community.

At Berkeley Law, Junker has served as co-director of the student-run Workers’ Rights Clinic, which provides free legal services to low-wage workers. He spent last summer at Legal Aid at Work, a San Francisco-based non-profit dedicated to strengthening the rights of low-wage workers, where he researched developments in employment law, prepared wage claims, and represented clients at an administrative hearing and settlement conference. In Spring 2018, he externed full-time for the Honorable Christopher Larsen at the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Administrative Law Judges, where he drafted decisions and orders in cases under the Longshore Act, the Sarbanes Oxley Act, and other federal employment statutes. Junker now serves as Senior Articles Editor for the Berkeley Journal of Employment and Labor Law and is writing a career guide to assist other law students interested in workers’ rights.

Before attending law school, Junker graduated summa cum laude from the University of California, San Diego with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Ethnic Studies and History. He spent six months living in a coal-mining community in eastern Kentucky, where he led home repairs, helped run a transitional housing program, and coordinated other relief efforts with local community leaders.

Following graduation, Junker plans to practice employment law in the Bay Area. He is especially interested in exploring how advocates can combine employment litigation with community organizing to advance the interests of working people. “I have found great joy in standing alongside workers to help fight for what’s rightfully theirs,” says Junker, “and it’s a blessing to join the talented, passionate team at Bryan Schwartz Law, P.C. this summer.”

Since 2009, Bryan Schwartz Law, P.C. has dedicated itself to continuing the struggle for civil rights and equality of employment opportunity, and helping Americans from every background to achieve their highest career potential. The firm focuses on individual, class, and collective actions involving discrimination and retaliation, harassment, denied disability accommodations, whistleblower reprisal, wage and hour violations, federal employees’ rights, and severance negotiations.
